Trafalgar High School’s touch rugby teams were given a heros welcome at the Cape Town International Airport when they returned victorious from the World High School Touch Rugby Championships in Singapore.
The District Six School’s under-18 boys’ team, the defending champions, maintained their unbeaten record in the three-day tournament that started on December 8. The girls’ team made it to the semi-finals on the first entry into an international competition. The teams were greeted at the airport by family and friends as well as education MEC, Cameron Dugmore. Team captain, Yacoob Slamang, said he was glad the tough competition was over but they had really enjoyed the experience. “We upped our game in the final against Australia and it was great.”
Team coach Siraj Legget said he was impressed with his lads’ performance and the way they pushed up the standard during the competition. “It was tough, but the boys really played well against the French and Australia. I dont think I have ever seen them play that well.”
Slamang’s mother was thrilled to see her boy back from the trip. “It shows their dedication and commitment and it is just great to see them succeed.”
Noershan Hendricks, 14, said that the experience was amazing and for the girls’ team as far as it did was wonderful.” The competition was tough but we really enjoyed it.”
Girls team manager Lezah Thomson said she was extremely proud of her girls’ achievement. “I am exceptionally proud of them. As a teacher you don’t only focus on their winnings or losing, it is about the experience as well.”
Dugmore addressed the pupils and parents at a function set up as they stepped off the plane.
“These teams have done exceptionally well, given the circumstances they are in, having no rugby field or sports field to practice on.” “Sport is about building young people and giving them hope and encouragement to make a success of their lives,” Dugmore said.
